This report presents the findings of the Sierra Club’s recent nationwide investigation into the shopping experience for consumer EVs. Updating findings from a similar effort conducted in the 10 ZEV states in 2016, the report highlights key findings based on survey responses and testimonials from volunteers who called or visited 909 auto dealerships and stores across all 50 states. The report concludes that the auto industry is failing to meet market demands and provide customers with a strong EV shopping experience. The survey results show that 74 percent of auto dealerships observed do not have a single EV on their lot for sale and that consumers were still not being given important information about charging, battery range, and financial incentives. In some instances, volunteers indicated that they could not go for a test drive because the vehicle was insufficiently charged or that they were encouraged to purchase a non-electric vehicle instead. The report also found that the shopping experience varied regionally with more EV offerings and higher customer satisfaction in the Western states. Other findings include observations that the used EV market is growing with 25 percent of dealerships offering at least one EV also had used models for sale.
