Iowa released information on the recipients of the state’s first cycle of VW Settlement funding on June 6, 2019. $4.6 million of the state’s $21 million total was awarded in this round. Grants include school buses, transit buses, freight trucks, and non-road vehicles. Only $200,000 or 4% of funds this cycle were awarded for electric off-road vehicles. 64 percent of the funds will go towards the purchase of new diesel vehicles and the remaining 32 percent will go towards propane school buses.
In total, this phase of funding will replace 147 vehicles with newer, cleaner models. Some of the funding will be dedicated to replacing conventional diesel models with B20. The second cycle of funding will be awarded later in 2019 and will prioritize zero emissions vehicles.
