On June 28th, 2019, Proterra was awarded a statewide contract by the Virginia Department of General Services to provide electric buses to transit agencies, universities, and institutions across the state. These stakeholders can now purchase electric buses directly through the pre-established contract. The contract is designed to allow transit agencies in other states to leverage the agreement to accelerate their procurement efforts as well.
The contract seeks to streamline the process of electric bus procurement as Virginia accelerates transit bus electrification plans. Earlier in June, Virginia announced plans to spend $12 million on electric buses combining funding from the VW Settlement and the state transit capital program. So far, the state has committed more than $14 million of its $94 million in VW settlement money to transit bus electrification.
