NYSERDA has released the 2024 Clean Energy Industry Report, the eighth edition of this comprehensive data-driven overview of New York State’s clean energy landscape. Overall, this report, which captures data through the end of 2023, tells a story of continued growth with New York adding 7,700 jobs in the clean energy sector last year alone – bringing the state to more than 178,000 clean energy workers and representing the largest employment gain in any single year since NYSERDA’s clean energy job tracking began.

Additional key findings from this year’s report include:

  • Clean and alternative transportation jobs grew the fastest at 16%, expanding by 2,100 jobs in just 12 months;
  • Electric vehicle charging jobs represent one of the fastest growing segments in clean energy, increasing 27% over the last year;
  • The building decarbonization and energy efficiency sector exceeded its pre-pandemic high, growing 3% and adding nearly 4,000 jobs. It remains the largest source of clean energy jobs, employing more than half of all clean energy workers;
  • Grid modernization and energy storage jobs grew by 7%;
  • Renewable electric power generation jobs grew by 6%, with over 1,400 new jobs;
  • Roughly one third of clean energy jobs were in disadvantaged communities (DACs), including 2,200 jobs added in 2023;
  • Clean energy workers expressed higher job satisfaction than other New York energy workers with 65% of clean energy workers reporting being “very satisfied” with their career;
    • 93% of clean energy workers anticipated career advancement in the next 12 months.
    • Entry-level clean energy jobs on average paid 12% more, and mid-level clean energy jobs paid 7% higher, compared to that same job outside the clean energy industry; and
  • Nine in ten clean energy employers offer healthcare benefits.

These results show that New York, in pursuing its ambitious climate agenda, is advancing equitable economic development and quality job opportunities for New Yorkers. The full report and an accompanying fact sheet are available on NYSERDA’s website.
