The Environmental Defense Fund is excited to share this newly released report Building the Grid to Need: Best Practices for Proactively Developing Distribution Grids to Support Truck and Bus Electrification. The report outlines the challenges of interconnecting charging infrastructure for trucks and buses at scale, and details ten recommendations for lawmakers, utility regulators, and utilities to ensure distribution grids are prepared for this new load. This includes:
- Reforms to how regulators review utility requests for grid upgrade and expansion projects;
- Technologies and policies that can mitigate the risk of overbuilding at the expense of ratepayers;
- Tools to hold utilities accountable and incentivize them to proactively, responsibly complete this work; and
- Consideration of the diverse array of funding streams that can and should be used to pay for this work.
While the report is centered on truck and bus electrification, many of the recommendations are transferrable to efforts to electrify other end uses including buildings and industry. EDF is hoping to leverage the report’s recommendations in several ongoing utility commission proceedings across the country that are considering the nexus of vehicle electrification and grid planning.
